Gold review: What worked and didn't in Prithviraj, Alphonse Puthren's film

What worked: direction

Alphonse Puthren's brilliant filmmaking made usual sequences in Gold, even more engaging

What didn't: SCRIPT

Gold had a wafer-thin plot and after the novelty of presentation faded away, it wasn't engaging enough

What worked: cameos

From Nayanthara to Soubin Shahir, from Roshan Mathew to Sharafudheen, the film was packed to the brim with stars

What didn't: duration

At a runtime of 2h 45 mins, the film was overlong and Alphonse's craft seemed self-indulgent after a point

What worked: Prithviraj

Prithviraj aced his role as Joshy, bringing humour to suspenseful scenes in the film

What didn't: subplots

The subplots involving the two father-in-laws, goons and cops became insipid and redundant

What worked: MUSIC

The BGM and songs by composer Rajesh Murugesan and lyricist Shabareesh Varma added zest to the film

What didn't: climax

The climax of the film seem to serve the superstar image of its lead actor, rather than the story itself

What worked: humour

Some of the comic scenes involving Shabareesh, Lalu Alex and Shammi Thilakan had the audience in splits
