Deadpool & Wolverine Review: Hugh Jackman & Ryan Reynolds Present a Fan Service of the Good Kind

Story

The TVA has pulled Wade Wilson back to their office, where he is told his world and the nine people he loves the most are about to die. He now needs to find a Wolverine to save his world (do not ask why). He finds one, and they embark on an adventure to save their world, meeting a whole lot of mutants along the way.

Direction

Shawn Levy, as the director, knows what works best for Deadpool, and this time, he even has Wolverine to play along. His task is to bring back the fading glory of the MCU, and he does that well, shaping a brilliant fan service over a movie that promises a grander scheme.

A Man Trying to Save the World

Deadpool in Deadpool & Wolverine also has an emotional arc. He breaks the fourth wall more times than usual. The meta humor is full-blown but well-balanced. Even in the most serious situations, Ryan Reynolds cracking a joke doesn't take away the magic from the scene.

A Mutant in Search of Redemption

Hugh Jackman's return as Logan is the most satisfying turn of events in the past many years. He is not the Logan we saw in those Fox movies; he is a rather wasted Logan who is in search of redemption and possibly a family that will accept him and that he can save. There is so much to see as he unleashes those claws again and fights alongside his partner, Deadpool.

Cameos

Deadpool & Wolverine is massively driven by the many cameos in the movie. However, most of these have already been spoiled by scoopers who leaked a lot of details. But there is one cameo that you haven't imagined in your wildest dreams.

Flaws

While everything about this fan service lands pretty well, the pace, which wants to rush to the next sequence, does not. Another thing that detracts from the magic is the villain not being well-developed. Emma Corrin’s Cassandra Nova never becomes a worthy villain, similar to many recent Marvel projects.

Final Verdict

Deadpool & Wolverine will be loved because it is a film designed for fans to have a wholehearted fun time. There is pop culture, glamor, and the studio embracing the R-rating in all its glory. Marvel has indeed made a smart move with how the studio has mounted the film.
