Strict rules

The Met has a strict no phone policy which means no photos and no selfies. Guests are pre-informed that use of phones for photography and social media will not be permitted inside

No smoking

There is a strict no-smoking rule inside the museum. However, in 2017, celebrities such as Bella Hadid and Dakota Johnson were pictured smoking in the bathroom at the event

Food restrictions

The Met Gala hosts a cocktail hour and a formal dinner. There is no onion, and no garlic in food to avoid bad breath. Any food that can cause spillages on extravagant ensembles is also avoided 

Seating rules

According to the event rules, spouses are never seated next to each other as the whole point of the event is to meet new people and to be interested in what others are doing
