Wimbledon 2024: Novak Djokovic seals spot in 10th final at The Championship

Two sets down, Lorenzo Musetti gave Novak Djokovic three match points in the third set, but then held his nerve and battled them off to stay in the match at 4-5. And then, with Djokovic serving for the match, the young Italian got to a break point, but squandered that and then gave the former another match point. This time, he converted, when a Musetti return was a tad too long. The straight set victory read 6-4 7-6 6-4, taking Djokovic to his 10th Wimbledon final and 37th Grand Slam final in his career.

He now gets a rematch of the 2023 final, where he was outplayed by Carlos Alcaraz in a gruelling 5-set match. This time around, Djokovic is hoping for a different outcome, one that allows him to take home the trophy an 8th time.

Djokovic’s 2024 Wimbledon final appearance is special considering that only weeks earlier, he seemed unlikely to make it to the tournament. The world number 2 player had injured the meniscus in his right knee in Roland Garros, which necessitated surgery. Djokovic says that when he came to London ahead of the tournament, he was still doubtful about participating and wanted to do so “only if he could go deep”.

Talking about his opponent, Djokovic added that Alcaraz is one of the greatest 21-year-olds seen in the sport – one who will win many more Grand Slams. On a jocular note, he added that he hopes Alcaraz’ next is not in two days. “It’s going to take the best of my abilities to beat him on Sunday,” said Djokovic.

The Wimbledon final between Djokovic and Alcaraz will be on July 14th, the live stream of which will be available on Disney+ Hotstar in India. On Saturday, it’s the turn of the ladies singles final, where Jasmine Paolini will take on Barbora Krejčíková.
