In the first Test of the two-match series against Australia on Wednesday, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, the opening batsman for West Indies and the son of legend Shivnarine Chandrapaul, made his international debut.

At the Optus Stadium, the 26-year-old received his Test cap from former West Indies batsman Brain Lara during the pre-game team meeting.

A tweet from Windies Cricket's official account included a clip of Chandrapaul's remarkable debut. "A moment he'll never forget! Tagenarine Chanderpaul receiving his Test cap from West Indies batting legend Brian Charles Lara," the tweet read.

It's interesting to note that Lara and Shivnarine Chanderpaul have a long history together. When Tagenarine's father Shivnarine had his first Test call-up against England in 1994, Lara was a member of the West Indies squad. In that game, the pair also shared the crease and were instrumental in the first innings. Shivnarine was also on the field when Lara scored 375 runs in the fifth game of the same series, shattering Sir Garry Sobers' record for the greatest Test score.

Talking about Tagenarine, a run-fest in first-class cricket during the 2022 season led to his selection for the Australia-bound team. He scored 437 runs at a remarkable average of 34.21 in 50 first-class matches, including two hundreds in the 2022 West Indies championship.

He did, however, got his confirmed spot in the starting XI last week when the Southpaw hammered 119 runs and 56 runs against the Prime Minister’s XI in front of several Australian bowlers in Canberra.

Talking about the Test match, the Windies cricket team decided to wear black armbands for the opening Test in memory of former wicketkeeper-batsman David Murray, who passed away on Friday in Barbados. Murray took part in 10 ODIs and 19 Tests. With nine catches in the 1981 Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he again established a record.
