Gujarat Titans (GT) were handed over an 11-run defeat by Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday, March 25, at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The team playing in front of its home crowd lacked resistance from the bowling unit, especially during the latter half of PBKS batting.
GT's decision of bowling first went against them, as PBKS' batters were off to a flying start. Shreyas Iyer, the skipper of the PBKS, played a sensational innings of 97 from 42 balls, smashing 5 fours and 9 sixes. Shashank Singh's cameo of 44 from 17 balls in the end raced PBKS to a mammoth total of 242/5.
In reply, Gujarat Titans started off their chase strongly, with the opening pair of Sai Sudarshan and Shubman Gill going hard at Punjab bowlers in the powerplay, by scoring 61 runs. After Gill's dismissal, GT's run chase was held together by Jos Buttler alongside Sai.
At one stage, GT was cruising away for a comfortable win until PBKS introduced its impact player in the form of Vijaykumar Vyshak. Vyshak delivered an excellent spell by bowling dot balls in the death overs. As a result, Buttler's 54 and Rutherford's 45 went in vain as GT fell 11 runs short of the target.
Reacting to Gujarat Titans' loss against Punjab Kings, an 'X' (formerly Twitter) user questioned Washington Sundar's exclusion from the lineup. The post caught Google CEO Sundar Pichai's attention, and he replied to it.
Shubman Gill-led Gujarat Titans (GT) will be up against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on March 29. The team would look to make a comeback and register two points in the standings.
MI, on the other hand, too lost its first match of IPL 2025 against CSK. Hardik Pandya, the skipper who wasn't available in that match, would be eager to register the first win of the season against its former franchise.
