In the second ODI against the West Indies, India opted to rest both Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma, providing an opportunity for other batters to showcase their skills. However, the plan did not quite pan out as expected and India faced a setback, losing the match by six wickets.
With Kohli and Rohit absent from the playing XI, India's batting saw only Ishan Kishan manage to score a half-century. Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav showed promise with their starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores. Players like Sanju Samson and Axar Patel, who were vying for spots in the lineup, were unable to make much use of the opportunity provided.
Batting first, India had a strong start, reaching 90/0 in the 17th over. However, the momentum shifted, and they were eventually bowled out for a mere 181 runs in 41 overs.
Seeing the collapse, fans took to social media to talk about missing the senior players from the game, however, Kohli, though not on the field as a player, was not entirely absent from the proceedings.
During India's innings, he could be seen performing the duties of a drinks carrier alongside Yuzvendra Chahal. The former captain could be seen doing so after the end of the 37th over when Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav were at the crease.
This gesture showed his dedication to the team, even when not actively participating in the game.
Notably, he had done so during the 2017 Dharamsala Test match between India and Australia, which was when he was captaining the team. Ajinkya Rahane led in his absence after Kohli had sat out due to an injury.
Talking about the game, they only had a target of 182 to chase, it wasn't a straightforward affair for the West Indies. Kyle Mayers got them off to a flier and scored 36 off 28 balls, thus helping the hosts race to 53 in 8.1 overs.
However, his fall led to a bit of a collapse before Captain Shai Hope found an able partner in Keacy Carty. The pair put up an unbeaten 91-run stand for the fifth wicket and led West Indies to victory. Hope himself finished on 63 off 80.
