At the end of round 2 of the men’s singles at the US Open 2024, 32 men are still standing, each hopeful of taking the trophy home. Only 2 among them are former champs – one, Novak Djokovic, the defending champion, who has won at Flushing Meadows 4 times already, and the other, Daniil Medvedev, who defeated Djokovic in 2021 to emerge victor.

Djokovic is gunning for a fifth victory here and his first Grand Slam for the year, which will take his career total to 25 Major wins. The 37-year-old Serbian got a walkover in round 2 when he was leading 2 sets to none, after his opponent Laslo Djere retired hurt. He will now meet Alexei Popyrin, the 25-year-old, ranked 28th in the world.

The duo has played each other thrice so far, with Djokovic sending Popyrin packing each time, including twice this year, at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. Djokovic, though, is not at his A-game, as was seen during his Round 2 encounter against Djere. His serve was all over the place, which he acknowledged after the early stoppage of the game.

Djokovic will have to step up it up against Popyrin, who took him to 4-set matches in both their encounters this year. They will play each other at 4.30 am (IST) on August 31. The match can be caught live on Sony Sports or SonyLIV in India.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner comfortably cruised into the third round, while the shock defeat came in the form of French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, who succumbed in straight sets to Botic van de Zandschulp, the 74-ranked Dutchman, who has no title wins to his credit and has never gone past Quarter-final stage at a Grand Slam major.
