The US Open 2024 will have a new champ in the men’s singles category on September 8. As is the case in the women’s singles category, none of the 4 semi-finalists have ever won at Flushing Meadows, with two- Jannik Sinner and Frances Tiafoe losing in the Round of 4, while the other two, Jack Draper and Taylor Fritz are in a Grand Slam major semi-final for the very first time. Whose name will go into the record books on September 9?
World No.1 Jannik Sinner’s Grand Slam track record is not the most impressive. He is the reigning Australian Open champion, but his best at Wimbledon, the French Open and now, the US Open, have been semi-final appearances. His previous best at the US Open was a quarter-final loss to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a hard-fought 5-set match. He will now play Jack Draper in the semi-final, the final schedule of which is yet to be determined.
The 22-year-old British player, whose personal best at a Grand Slam event was a 4th Round appearance at the US Open in 2023, is in his first-ever Major semi-final. He edged out players like Botic van de Zandschulp, who had sent Carlos Alcaraz packing, as well as Alex de Minaur, among others, in his road to the semi-finals.

In 2022, Tiafoe made it to the semi-final of the US Open, but lost to Carlos Alcaraz in a gruelling 5-set match. The following year, he made it to the quarter-final, but lost to Ben Shelton. This year, Tiafoe got a rematch, and sent Shelton packing in round 3. He now meets Taylor Fritz.
Last year, Fritz was also only a quarter-finalist, his best ever at a Grand Slam major. He departed in the Round of 8 at this year’s Australian Open and Wimbledon too and has now set up his first ever semi-final outing. A year ago, he was up against Novak Djokovic, who trounced Fritz in straight sets and went on to win the title.

The official broadcast partner of the US Open in India is Sony Sport, with live streaming also available on SonyLIV. The schedule of play of the semi-final is yet to be determined, but if these are evening session matches on September 6 in the US, they will be early morning encounters on September 7in India. The final schedule will be updated as soon as it becomes available.
