Shanghai Masters 2024: Two former champs among the 8 men heading into the quarter-finals of the 8th ATP Masters 1000 tournament

The Shanghai Masters 2024 is down to the final 8, with the results reflecting a few upsets. Grigor Dimitrov, ranked 9th, was sent packing, as also, 11th seed Tommy Paul and 2nd seed Alexander Zverev. The quarter-final matches will be held between October 10 and 11.
The first match in the Round of 16 saw World No. 1 Jannik Sinner go up against Ben Shelton, in what was a repeat of their match at the same tournament a year ago. Back then, Shelton had got the better of Sinner, but this time around, the US Open winner was in no mood to let that happen again. Sinner dispatched Shelton in straight sets (6-4 7-6).
2019 Shanghai Masters winner Daniil Medvedev took on Stefanos Tstitsipas and defeated him in straight sets (7-6 6-3). Carlos Alcaraz also had a straight set win against Gael Monfils; with the first three-set match coming up between Tommy Paul and Tomas Machac. The 30th ranked Machac got the better of Paul, after conceding the first set. The final score- 3-6 6-4 6-3.
The next unexpected exit came when Jakub Mensik trounced 9thseed Grigor Dimitrov in three sets, 6-3 3-6 6-4. Up next was the match between 4-time champ Novak Djokovic and Roman Safiullin, with the latter fresh off defeating Frances Tiafoe in the Round of 32. Djokovic, who is yet to drop a set in the tournament, made easy work of Safiullin with a score of 6-3 6-2.
Taylor Fritz then defeated Holger Rune to advance to the Round of 8 (6-1 6-2), while Zverev perished to David Goffin, the number 1 Dutch player, who is ranked 66 in the world. Goffin won in straight sets – 6-4 7-5.
The quarter-final lineup
The first set of quarter-final matches will be played on October 10. It’s Sinner vs Medvedev and Alcaraz vs Machac at the Stadium Court. The matches on the following day are Fritz vs Goffin and Djokovic vs Mensik.
