Bishan Singh Bedi, the iconic former captain of the Indian cricket team and legendary spinner, has passed away in Delhi at the age of 77 after an extended illness. His departure will leave a profound void in the world of cricket. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt condolences through a post on 'X,' (formerly known as Twitter).

PM Modi wrote, "Deeply saddened by the passing of noted cricketer Shri Bishan Singh Bedi Ji. His passion for the sport was unwavering and his exemplary bowling performances led India to numerous memorable victories. He will continue to inspire future generations of cricketers. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti."

Prominent present and former Indian cricketers namely R Ashwin, Virender Sehwag, Irfan Pathan and more also utilized social media to pay their respects to the late Indian cricket legend. 

Rajeev Shukla, Vice President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), offered his tribute, stating, "Saddened by the news of demise of former cricketer Shri Bishan Singh Bedi Ji. The legendary spinner was one of the most successful overseas players. He was an elegant mover with both bat & ball. He will remain an all time inspiration for cricketers. My condolences. Om Shanti."

Bedi, recognized as one of the preeminent left-arm spinners in the cricketing world, was a vital member of India's celebrated spin quartet, alongside BS Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna, and Srinivas Venkataraghavan during the 1970s.

Throughout his distinguished first-class career, Bedi captured a remarkable 1,560 wickets, a record unsurpassed by any other Indian cricketer. He made his Test debut in 1967 against the West Indies, ultimately representing India in 67 Test matches and ten One-Day Internationals (ODIs). 

His final appearance for the Indian cricket team occurred at the Oval in 1979 during a match against England. Bishan Singh Bedi's remarkable contributions to the world of cricket shall forever be cherished and celebrated.
