The best in the world of sports will congregate in the French Capital between July 26 and August 11 for the 2024 Olympic Games. Over ten thousand athletes will compete in the 320 events spread across 32 sports categories. This time, India is sending a 117-athlete strong contingent to represent the country at the Games; 40 of these are women. The Indian Olympic Association announced this earlier today, adding that a 140-strong support staff and official group will also fly out to Paris for the duration of the Games.

While the Indian athletes include 5 returning medalists – Neeraj Chopra, PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain and the men’s hockey team. Wrestlers Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya, who had won medals in Tokyo are not headed to Paris. Roughly 2/3rdof the contingent are Olympic Games debutants, with swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu, at 14 years of age, being the youngest member. The senior most on the team are table tennis player Sharath Kamal and tennis player Rohan Bopanna, aged 42 and 43, respectively.

Sport-wise split up of contingent

In the sport-wise split, athletics has the largest representation, with 29 names, followed by shooting (21 – Indian shooters grabbed quota in all the categories),19 in men’s hockey, 8 in table tennis and 7 in badminton. With 6 members each come boxing, wrestling (including only 1 man) and archery, while golf has 4. Tennis has 3 members, swimming 2 and sailing 2. National record holder in shot put, Abha Katua was a surprise exclusion from the final list of athletes heading to Paris.

India’s Olympic campaign will begin on July 25 with the Archery Women’s and Men’s Individual Ranking Round. Thereafter, the action kicks off on July 27 with India’s first hockey match against New Zealand, Badminton Group Stage matches, among others. Neeraj Chopra’s defense of his javelin gold will begin on August 7.
