The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which got the opportunity to host an ICC tournament after a long gap of 29 years, has faced huge financial losses after conducting the Champions Trophy 2025. According to reports, PCB spent a whopping amount of INR 869 crores to prepare for and host the tournament. In return, the board only managed to churn out INR 52 crores from it, and the majority of earnings have come through hosting fees and ticket sales.
All those losses have already started to reflect in the domestic cricket landscape of the country. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has reportedly cut down on several facilities provided to the players, including the reduction of match fees and downgrading the accommodation of players.
There have been three primary reasons behind the huge monetary loss of INR 739 crores for PCB post-Champions Trophy. The first one is the massive amount spent on reconstructing the infrastructure of the stadiums that were not in ideal condition to host a multi-nation tournament.
The second big reason was the Indian cricket team that denied travelling to Pakistan, citing political and security concerns. Pakistan, despite having the hosting rights, travelled to Dubai to play against India. And since India played all its matches in Dubai and excelled to the knockout stages, it significantly reduced earnings from tickets and sponsorships for Pakistan.
The third reason is Pakistan's 'no-win and only learn' performance that resulted in a low turnout of the local crowd. The hosting nation just played a single match against New Zealand in front of the local crowd and lost it badly. The last match against Bangladesh got abandoned due to the rain. As a result, the defending champions and the hosts lasted only five days in the tournament.
