While chasing the 223 runs posted by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 36 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opening batter Virat Kohli appeared to be in fine form. However, drama unfolded after he was given out in the 2.1 over. Harshit Rana surprised Kohli with the delivery, and the RCB batter just lobbed it tamely. The KKR pacer moved forward and took it easily.
Kohli did not move and immediately reviewed it, as he was sure that it was above waist height. However, the umpire stated that it was an umpire review. The delivery was a slower ball, and it dipped enough for the ball-tracking to show that it would have been below the waist had Kohli been in his normal batting stance. Kohli soon expressed his displeasure towards the on-field umpire before walking off.
As Kohli was batting outside his crease, according to the third umpire Michael Gough, the ball had dipped to below waist height. Kohli shook his head while walking back for 18(7) [4s-1 6s-2]. Fans took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to discuss the dismissal, with some alleging that the umpire cheated, while others believed it was a clear-out.
As for the ongoing clash, at the time of writing this article, RCB has lost six wickets but scored 155 runs in 13 overs. They have recently lost two set batters, Will Jacks (55 off 32) and Rajat Patidar (52 off 23), in quick succession while Cameron Green (6 off 4) and Mahipal Lomror (4 off 3) followed.
