On the first day of the historic one-off Test match between India and England at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai, Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur experienced a deja vu moment. She was on the verge of achieving her maiden half-century in the longest format of the game but fell short by a run due to a bizarre runout.
Attempting to take a run after defending a delivery from Charlie Dean to point, Harmanpreet quickly backtracked as it became clear that the run wasn't feasible. English fielder Danielle Wyatt executed a direct hit, catching Harmanpreet off guard.
The umpires reviewed the runout, and the replays revealed that her bat was still stuck in front of the crease when the ball hit the stumps, leading to her dismissal just before reaching her half-century.
This incident brought back memories of the 2023 T20 World Cup semi-final against Australia, where Kaur faced a similar runout with her bat stuck in the pitch. However, on that occasion, she had already reached her half-century before the runout.
Despite the setback, the Indian women put on a commendable performance, posting 405 runs and losing seven wickets in 91 overs. Shubha Satheesh (69), Jemimah Rodrigues (68), Yastika Bhatia (66), and Sneh Rana (30) contributed to the team's total with openers Smriti Mandhana (17) and Shafali Verma (19) also scoring at the start.
Deepti Sharma (59*) and Pooja Vastrakar are at the crease and will aim to extend India's batting on Day 2 of the one-off Test game.
