In a historic feat, Ravichandran Ashwin achieved a remarkable milestone by dismissing Tagenarine Chanderpaul in the first innings of the opening Test between India and the West Indies. This accomplishment makes Ashwin the first Indian bowler to dismiss both the father and son duo in the prestigious format of Test cricket.
Ashwin's well-planned strategy was evident as he skillfully set up the left-handed batsman. Tagenarine, unfortunately, misjudged the line and length of a swinging delivery, leading to his dismissal by getting bowled.
Ashwin had previously claimed the wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Tagenarine's father and a former West Indian cricketer. This achievement further cements Ashwin's legacy as he surpasses the esteemed spin bowler Anil Kumble to become the Indian cricketer with the highest number of bowled dismissals in Test cricket. With his 95th scalp, Ashwin has surpassed Kumble's record of 94, while Kapil Dev follows closely with 88 dismissals and Mohammed Shami with 66.
Talking about the match, it began with Windies captain Kraigg Brathwaite winning the toss and electing to bat first. The game also marked the debut of promising talents Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan.
At the end of Day 1, India had first got the host side 150 all out with only debutant Alick Athanaze putting up a fight. He missed his 50 by a few runs but his efforts managed to give Windies something. Opener Kraigg Brathwaite scored 20 and was the second-highest run-scorer for them.
As for the Men in Blue, they managed to put up a score of 80/0 with Rohit Sharma and Jaiswal being unbeaten on the crease with respective scores of 30(65)* and 40(73)* respectively.
