On a day that promised centuries, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli fell short of their hundreds in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 game against Sri Lanka. Following the early dismissal of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, Kohli and Gill notched up their respective half-centuries and seemed poised for centuries until Dilshan Madushanka intervened.
Gill, on the cusp of his hundred, reluctantly departed after an unfortunate dismissal. He attempted to guide a short slower delivery past the wicketkeeper, but an awkward bounce resulted in an edge that Kusal Mendis easily caught. Gill departed for 92 off as many balls, featuring 11 fours and 2 sixes.
Kohli's quest for a century was also cut short by a slower ball that held up on the pitch. He mistimed the shot, causing the ball to hit the splice of his bat and pop towards short cover, where a fielder executed a low, diving catch. Kohli exited the field with 88 runs from 94 balls, which included 11 fours.

The simultaneous departure of both well-set batsmen and the stunned crowd at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium led some netizens to suggest that a "nazar" (evil eye) had been cast on these two players.
At the time of writing this article, India had lost three wickets to Madushanka, accumulating 214 runs in 34 overs. KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer aimed to guide the team beyond the 300-run mark.
