Shreyas Iyer fell short of a century in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 match against Sri Lanka, joining Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli in missing the milestone. All three batsmen had reached their half-centuries and appeared set for centuries until Dilshan Madushanka came into the attack.
Iyer attempted to clear the cover boundary but ended up slicing the ball, which was comfortably caught by a fielder. This wicket marked Madushanka's fifth in a fantastic performance at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. The delivery was wider and fuller, and Iyer couldn't time it, resulting in an easy catch for the fielder. Iyer's impressive innings came to a close at 82 runs from 56 balls, including three fours and as many sixes.
As Iyer departed, the camera captured the crowd, including KL Rahul's wife, Athiya Shetty, and her brother, Ahan Shetty. Athiya was seen screaming, "No, no, no" as the ball went high in the air before being caught. Many fans echoed her sentiments, stating that they felt the same way.
India concluded their innings with 357 runs on the board, losing eight wickets in their allotted 50 overs. Gill was the top scorer with 92, followed by Kohli's 88, and Ravindra Jadeja contributed 35 runs to set a formidable total.
Now, the question remains whether the Indian bowlers can defend this total and secure a spot in the semi-finals of the ODI World Cup 2023.
