Day 1 unfolded as a paradise for pacers, witnessing both India and South Africa succumb to all-out performances, with the Proteas even returning to bat on the same day. The events at Newlands in Cape Town commenced after the home team won the toss and chose to bat.

Mohammed Siraj spearheaded a relentless attack, claiming six wickets, while Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar contributed with two wickets each, limiting South Africa to a mere 55 runs.

However, when India took the crease, a familiar narrative unfolded. The Indian batsmen struggled, accumulating only 153 runs, and securing a 98-run lead. Rohit Sharma (39), Shubman Gill (36), and Virat Kohli (46) were the sole contributors in double digits, as six Indian batters faced a duck. Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, and Nandre Burger each clinched three wickets, complemented by one run-out, as the Men in Blue were bundled out.

The day, still not having ended, saw the Proteas return to bat. While Aiden Markram and Dean Elgar had a promising start, Mukesh Kumar dismissed the captain, and Elgar departed for 12 in his final Test innings.

Subsequently, Tony de Zorzi faced seven deliveries, scoring a single run before falling to Mukesh Kumar. Debutant Tristan Stubbs managed just one run from 14 balls before Jasprit Bumrah sent him back to the dressing room.

At Stumps, Aiden Markram (36*) and David Bedingham (7*) stood at the crease, with South Africa trailing by 36 runs. The prospect of the 2nd Test concluding within two days looms, adding further intrigue to the unfolding match.

Ahead of the 2nd Test against South Africa, Team India made two changes to their playing XI, reintroducing the experienced all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja, into the Test lineup for the ongoing ICC World Test Championship (WTC).
