The drinks break proved to be a turning point for the Indian cricket team as Mohammed Shami dismantled the New Zealand partnership, reaching the milestone of 50 wickets in World Cups and securing an additional wicket – all within a single over in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023. The remarkable one-run-two-wickets over stirred the dormant crowd at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, bringing them to life with cheers and applause.

Shami entered the attack in the 32nd over, claiming the crucial wicket of skipper Kane Williamson. Bowling on a length and angling back into the right-hander, Shami exploited Williamson's attempt to clear the backward square leg boundary with a pick-up whip. Although the idea was sound, the execution faltered as the shot caught the lower half of the bat, soaring high and landing behind square on the on-side. Suryakumar Yadav made a safe catch, and Williamson departed for 69 runs off 73 balls.
With this wicket, Shami joined the elite club of bowlers who have taken 50 wickets in World Cups.

However, Shami's appetite for wickets persisted, and soon after, he claimed the dismissal of the newly arrived batsman, Tom Latham. The dismissal was as clear-cut as it gets, and Latham found himself departing with a duck to his name.
Shami delivered a nip-backer that pitched around the off-stump, skidding back into the left-hander. Latham, caught off guard by the pace, was tardy in getting his bat down. The ball crashed into the pads, squarely in front of the middle, leaving umpire Richard Illingworth with an easy decision.
In the second innings, Shami had set the tone by securing the initial two wickets of the openers, dismissing Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, both for 13 runs each.
