After a strong opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, and successful 50-run collaborations between Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, as well as Kohli and KL Rahul, a pivotal moment unfolded in the 21st match of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 against New Zealand – a run-out blunder involving Suryakumar Yadav.
In the 33.5th over, Suryakumar Yadav played the ball towards the cover and initiated a run. However, Virat Kohli hesitated, waiting for the ball to clear the fielder. Mitchell Santner made a remarkable diving effort to retrieve the ball, creating uncertainty for Kohli, who then reversed his movement. Unfortunately, by this time, Suryakumar Yadav was too close to Kohli.
The throw, albeit off target, reached Trent Boult, who was positioned nowhere near the stumps in the middle of the pitch. Nonetheless, SKY had advanced too far down the crease, prompting Boult to execute a clever under-arm flick back to Tom Latham, resulting in a straightforward runout. It was an outstanding piece of fielding by Santner.
Replays suggested that Virat Kohli might have made it safely had he taken off immediately. However, Kohli seemed to opt for the safer approach, which was understandable given his well-established batting form. Shortly thereafter, fans took to social media to voice their opinions on the incident.

Kohli had reached his half-century, and Rohit Sharma had contributed 46 runs, while Shreyas Iyer scored 33, KL Rahul made 27, and Shubman Gill added 26. India still needs 73 runs in 84 balls.
