India's batting form appears to be struggling on Day 2 of the 4th Test, with five wickets having already fallen, four of them to England spinner Shoaib Bashir in Ranchi. After dismissing the visitors for 353, the first wicket to fall of India was that of captain Rohit Sharma, who was dismissed for two runs at the JSCA International Stadium Complex by James Anderson.
However, thereafter, it was all about Shoaib Bashir's show as he claimed the wickets of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Rajat Patidar, and Ravindra Jadeja. In 52 overs, India managed to score 171 runs and lost 6 wickets on just Day 2.
Bashir first dismissed Gill for 38 runs. It was a flighted delivery, and Gill played it down the wrong line while attempting to defend. The ball beat the inside edge and struck him on the pad.
Bashir later got the better of Rajat Patidar as the ball skidded through and beat the batter's back-foot block. The impact was in front of the middle and leg, and one might consider Patidar slightly unlucky as he walked back for 17 (42).
His third victim was Jadeja, who had come up the order. The extra bounce caught Jadeja's inside edge as he lunged forward, resulting in the ball hitting off the pad and lobbing for a simple catch at forward short-leg. The Indian all-rounder departed for 12 (12).
Jaiswal, who was progressing well, also fell to Bashir, having to walk back for 73. The ball was bowled a fraction short, and Jaiswal attempted to play it through the off-side. However, the ball stayed low, hitting the toe-end, and bounced back onto the stumps. Although the length was short, he was deceived by the low bounce, and India lost half their side, still a long way from England's total.
Earlier in the day, England managed to add 51 runs on Day 2 before being bowled out. The standout performances were by Joe Root, who forged two crucial partnerships: 113 runs for the 6th wicket with Foakes and 102 runs for the 8th wicket with Ollie Robinson.
At the top of the order, Zak Crawley contributed with 42, while Robinson made 58, and Foakes added 47, although they played supporting roles to Root. Ravindra Jadeja was the star for India, claiming four wickets as he dismantled the lower order. Debutant Akash Deep made an impact by removing the top three batters, and Mohammed Siraj chipped in with two wickets.
