On Friday evening, news broke that Ravichandran Ashwin had withdrawn from the Indian Test team due to a family medical emergency. The details were not disclosed, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) urging respect for Ashwin's privacy and assuring full support during this difficult time.
With Ashwin absent for the remainder of the match, questions arose - will Team India bring in a replacement bowler or proceed with only four players?
According to the rules, it only permits player substitutions solely for concussion or COVID-19. This will leave India with just 10 players for the game. Devdutt Padikkal substituted for Ashwin in the field.
However, according to Dinesh Karthik on air, he said that Ashwin can come back anytime during this match and bowl straightaway as the umpires have given the Indian all-rounder that favor.
As for Ashwin withdrawing, BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla had taken to his social media to state that he had flown to Chennai to be with his unwell mother.
In the ongoing match, Day 2 witnessed Ben Duckett's remarkable century at the Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium in Rajkot. Duckett's quick century, achieved in just 81 balls, posed challenges for the Indian bowlers.
