When discussing cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and his remarkable records, another name that naturally arises is Virat Kohli. Often referred to as the 'KING,' Kohli is currently just one century away from matching Tendulkar's impressive century count in ODIs. However, in a match during the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 against England, Kohli approached another record that many fans hoped he wouldn't.

Kohli suffered a rare setback, getting dismissed without scoring a run in the match at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. This marked the first time he recorded a duck in an ODI World Cup match and only the third occasion it happened in ODIs against England. The previous instances took place at Eden Gardens in 2011 and Dharamsala in 2013.

Interestingly, this recent duck has put Kohli level with Tendulkar for the most ducks for India while batting in the top seven positions. Both Kohli and Tendulkar share 34 ducks each across various formats. Virender Sehwag and Rohit Sharma follow with 31 and 30 ducks, respectively, while Sourav Ganguly encountered a duck 29 times in his international career.

In ODIs, Kohli now has 16 ducks to his name, along with Rohit and Ganguly, who also have the same count. Above them, Harbhajan Singh has 17 ducks, while Yuvraj Singh and Anil Kumble each have 18 ducks, and Javagal Srinath holds 19 ducks to his name. Leading this list is the legendary Sachin Tendulkar with 20 ducks in his ODI career.

In the context of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023, India, who have won all five of their matches, faced the challenge of batting first in Lucknow. England, currently the bottom-ranked team, have encountered four defeats in their five matches. If India secures a victory, they will earn a spot in the semi-finals of the tournament. However, a loss would postpone their qualification bid.
