After a splendid innings from skipper Rohit Sharma, who scored 131 runs following the early loss of three wickets, Team India witnessed a new partnership emerge between Ravindra Jadeja and Sarfaraz Khan at the now-renamed Niranjan Shah Cricket Stadium in Rajkot.
However, Jadeja's 100 came after the sacrifice of debutant Sarfaraz Khan's wicket. Jadeja had slowed down a lot as soon as he reached the 90s, while Sarfaraz came in and even smashed a quick 50.
Sarfaraz had made an explosive entry and swiftly reached his half-century. The middle-order batsman took on the bowlers aggressively, achieving his half-century in just 48 balls on his Test debut. His father and wife watched proudly from the stands as Sarfaraz raised his bat to soak in the cheers for him. However, he was run out for 62 runs.
Soon after the run-out, which was called by Jadeja and later stopped, skipper Rohit Sharma was frustrated and he was captured on camera throwing his cap in frustration.
As of writing this article, India has posted 315 runs in 83 overs, having lost five wickets. The Indian side got to a good position after a shaky start that saw their top-order collapse, leaving the scoreboard at 33/3.
India suffered early setbacks with Yashasvi Jaiswal (10), Shubman Gill (0), and Rajat Patidar (5) departing in quick succession. Mark Wood's two overs proved decisive as he dismissed both Jaiswal and Gill, while Tom Hartley claimed the wicket of Patidar. Wood returned to the attack later and also claimed the prized scalp of the Indian skipper, who departed after scoring 131 runs.
