After winning the toss and opting to bat, England enjoyed a strong start but began losing momentum following the first wicket on Day 1 of the 1st Test against India at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. The English team's 'Bazball' batting prowess was put to the test, forcing them to shift to a defensive strategy as wickets continued to fall.
Openers Ben Duckett (35) and Zak Crawley (20) displayed aggressive batting, hitting Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj around the ground in the initial 10 overs. However, India gained control once the spinners entered the game.
Ravichandran Ashwin got the first wicket in the 12th over by dismissing Duckett, while Ravindra Jadeja secured the wicket of Ollie Pope (1). Crawley also fell shortly afterwards, but Root and Bairstow managed to stabilize England's innings. Nonetheless, Jadeja later dismissed Root (29).

In the process, Ashwin and Jadeja surpassed the duo of Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh to become the Indian pair with the most wickets in Test cricket.

Axar Patel, who was brought into the attack, made an impact by dismissing Jonny Bairstow (37), currently the highest scorer for his side, and Ben Foakes (4). The trio of R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel each claimed two wickets, wreaking havoc on the top order of the visiting side.
