In the opening over of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023 Final against Australia, captain Rohit Sharma, having conceded 15 runs, handed the new ball to Mohammed Shami instead of Siraj at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium.
During the initial over, Bumrah had an opportunity to dismiss David Warner on the first ball, inducing a thick outside edge. However, confusion in the slip cordon, comprising Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill, allowed the ball to evade them, resulting in a boundary to third man.

Rectifying the lapse in the first over, Shami, following a wide on his initial delivery, claimed Warner's wicket on the next ball. The decision to bring Shami on early proved successful, with a well-angled delivery moving away late. Warner attempted a cut, but he ended up toe-ending it to Kohli, the lone slip fielder.

If dew is not a factor, India will remain hopeful, but at the halfway mark, Australia holds the advantage. The onus is on Indian pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, and Mohammed Siraj to secure early wickets and maintain competitiveness in the match.
