In their 1st match of the AFC Asian Cup 2023, India encountered Australia in what was widely perceived as a David vs Goliath encounter. Despite putting up an exceptional defensive performance, the Blue Tigers conceded a 2-0 defeat against the Socceroos at the Ahmed bin Ali Stadium in Qatar on Saturday.

Australia, having advanced to the round of 16 in the 2022 World Cup and currently holding the 25th position in the FIFA rankings, posed a formidable challenge for the 102nd-ranked Team India. Nevertheless, a noteworthy aspect was the commendable support that the Indian side received from fans at the stadium, persisting until the very end.

Igor Stimac's team adopted a deep defensive strategy in the first half, as their Group B rivals dominated ball possession. The Indian side effectively frustrated the Australians during the initial half, visibly evident in their defensive efforts. India had opportunities early on, notably with Sunil Chhetri narrowly missing a header.

However, the turning point came in the 50th minute when Irvine netted the first goal with his left foot. Despite India maintaining pressure, Graham Arnold's team spent most of the second half in India's half.

In the 73rd minute, Bos doubled the lead by tapping in McGree's cross and drowning all of India's hopes. However, as the commentators repeatedly said, the score should have been much higher, but the Indian defence was too strong.

Placed in a group alongside Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria, India is considered the underdog to qualify for the knockout stage. While Uzbekistan poses a significant challenge, the Blue Tigers may have a chance against Syria. If India manages to advance and secure a spot in the knockout stage, it would mark a historic day for Indian football.

India enters the tournament with key injuries, as defender Anwar Ali, midfielder Jeakson Singh, and winger Ashique Kuruniyan are sidelined due to injuries. Additionally, Sahal Abdul Samad will miss the opening match as he has not yet recovered from an ankle injury.
