The Mumbai Indians (MI) have faced a downward spiral as they lost their second consecutive game in the 17th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Consequently, the scrutiny and animosity towards their new skipper, Hardik Pandya, has only intensified after two away losses. What began as booing at stadiums, went on to quickly escalate to online abuse directed not only at him but also at his family. Not just that, every aspect of Pandya's behaviour, whether on the field or within the team environment, has been dissected, with criticisms focusing on his 'attitude' and 'anger', accompanied by derogatory remarks.

While much of the hostility has come from Rohit Sharma's fan base, particularly following his removal as MI skipper in favour of Pandya, others have also joined in the targeting of the all-rounder. However, after two matches and witnessing the extent to which the hatred has surpassed, numerous cricket enthusiasts have begun to question the excessive backlash directed at Pandya. Many have taken to social media platforms, notably X (formerly known as Twitter), to express that the criticism towards Pandya has gone too far. They also raise queries regarding the lack of scrutiny towards the MI management, who made the trade for Pandya from Gujarat Titans (GT) and made him the captain.
Pandya made his debut with Mumbai Indians in 2015 and over the next six years, went on to establish himself as one of the franchise's most influential match-winners. His performances led to him becoming a pivotal member of the Indian national team across various formats as well.
He went on to even prove himself in high-pressure encounters such as the 2017 Champions Trophy final and key fixtures during the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Ahead of the 2022 IPL mega-auction, Mumbai had issues on who should have been their three Indian retentions. While Rohit Sharma was a certainty, the choice for the remaining spots were for Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.

Consequently, Mumbai released Pandya, who was then taken by the new IPL franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) and even captained it. He surprised all by winning the title in their first year itself and even reaching the final in the subsequent season.
Pandya's return to Mumbai, this time as captain, was met with mixed reactions. The Gujarat fans felt betrayed by Pandya's departure, while Rohit Sharma fans questioned his audacity in replacing the established Indian skipper.
