Shubman Gill's lacklustre performance has attracted criticism from social media users who were hoping to see a lot more from him

Just as Team India was put into by Pat Cummins, one hoped to see another impressive partnership put up by openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. While the Indian skipper got off to his trademark start and looked in no trouble, his partner-in-crime did not deliver on the huge expectations he had set for himself.
The elegant Shubman Gill would attempt one of his main shots and pull Mitchell Starc's delivery between mid-wicket and mid-off. To his misfortune, the slightly ill-timed shot would go straight to Adam Zampa stationed at mid-off. Gill would score a measly 4 off 7 deliveries before returning to the dressing room.
And expectedly, his lacklustre performance has attracted criticism from social media users who were hoping to see a lot more from him. "Is #ShubmanGill moving from crown Prince to clown Prince of cricket? Expected better.." read one harsh comment on X (formerly Twitter) while another ensured that Shreyas Iyer too was pulled up. Iyer, having begun his innings on the back of a great run (two back-to-back hundreds), put on a poor show himself and managed to score only four from three deliveries.
"For Shubham Gill and Shreyas Iyer it was the platform to make history. Both disappointed with unnecessary shots," read the said comment.
Another comment pointed out the fact that Shubman Gill hasn't delivered in any of the ICC tournament finals thus far. Having played two World Test Championship finals previously, Gill has only managed scores of 28 & 8 and 13 & 8 respectively and his score of 4 in the CWC finals will go down as another failure for the star-in-the-making.
To their credit, Pat Cummins and co. have been exceptional in the field and have curbed a lot of the flow with some great fielding. Travis Head led by example with a superb diving catch to dismiss Rohit Sharma and stop the Indian skipper in his tracks to another big score. Similarly, the ground fielding allowed the Aussies to save a significant number of runs in the all-important game.
