Unchartered territory - that’s how the commentators of the second semi-final of the French Open 2024 described the match between Jasmine Paolini and Mirra Andreeva repeatedly. Neither the 28-year-old Paolini nor the 17-year-old Andreeva had ever been at this stage of a Grand Slam. But on Thursday evening, one of them came with a plan and executed it with military precision to march into her first Grand Slam final in only 1 hour and 13 minutes. And that was Paolini, the first Italian in a French Open final since Sara Errani in 2012.

Paolini and Andreeva headed into this match with the latter having a slight edge. Andreeva had beaten Paolini in the Madrid Open earlier this year. But on the big stage of the French Open, it was Paolini who held her nerve and played some scintillating tennis that forced Andreeva to make countless errors en route the former’s 6-3 6-1 win.

Up next, Mirra will take on Iga Swiatek, the World No.1, who beat Coco Gauff earlier in the day and is eyeing a fourth win at Roland Garros. The final of the 2024 French Open Women’s singles will be held on June 8 at the Court Philippe Chatrier.

Meanwhile, on June 7, it is the turn of the four men’s semi-finalists to take centre court. At 6 pm (IST), Carlos Alcaraz will take on Jannik Sinner, who, as of this week is the new World No. 1, after Novak Djokovic retired hurt from the tournament. The second match of the day is between two-time runner-up Casper Ruud and Alexander Zverev. The Men’s Singles final is on June 9
