May 26 is when the 2024 French Open main draw starts with the Round 1 matches. Between May 26 and May 28, 47 matches will be held across the various courts in Roland Garros. The Women’s Singles Round 1 matches are also being held on the same dates. 14-time champion Rafael Nadal and defending champion Novak Djokovic are back in France, both looking for one last hurrah at the tournament. Nadal’s still not in his best form following injury and Djokovic also has not had a great start to the 2024 tennis season.

By all accounts Nadal has the toughest draw, playing Italian Open champ Alexander Zverev in the first round. Most other top players have it relatively easy, with Novak’s first against French wild card entrant Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Carloz Alcaraz, Hubert Hurkacz and Alejandro Tabilo are all playing Qaulfie/Lucky Loser.

Other notable 1st round matches include Tommy Paul vs Pedro Cachin, Taylor Fritz vs Federico Coria, Casper Ruud vs Jakub Mensik, Holger Rune vs Daniel Evans, Daniil Medvedev vs Dominik Koepfer, Andrey Rublev vs Taro Daniel, Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Marton Fucsovics, Nicolas Jarry vs Corentin Moutet, Andy Murray vs Stan Wawrinka and Jannik Sinner vs Christopher Eubanks.

All about Roland Garros

Since 1928, The clay court Grand Slam, the French Open is held at the Roland Garros Stadium. Spread over 34 acres, the stadium has 20 courts, besides housing the French national Training Centre, a multimedia museum on the history of tennis, a restaurant and bar, among others. The centre court has a seating capacity of 15,225. Nadal’s 14 wins is likely to remain unchallenged for a while. Djokovic has won it only thrice, and all the other earlier winners are no longer playing active tennis.
