At the start of the 2024 French Open, defending Iga Swiatek was the hot favourite to win the tournament a fourth time, while no one thought that her opponent in the final, Jasmine Paolini would make it to this stage. Paolini, had never before been in a Grand Slam final and her Roland Garros debut came on the back of some impressive tennis in the last fortnight. The odds, though, were stacked against Paolini – she was playing a three-time champ; someone she’d played a couple of times earlier and lost to each time. Could she turn things around?

At the start of the match, it seemed that Swiatek was a tad rattled, allowing Paolini to break her serve and take a 2-1 lead, but the World No.1 pulled herself together soon enough and took the first set 6-2 in only 34 minutes. 10 minutes later, she was 3 games away from a fourth title at Roland Garros. This is not to say that Paolini didn’t try; she did, but this was the day that not much was going right for her.

Eventually, after spending just over an hour on court, Swiatek won her fourth French Open and 5th Grand Slam. She is only the second player after Justin Henin to win it three times in a row and has joined the ranks of those with four or more to their credit, including the Henin, Steffi Graff and Chris Evert.

But for an almost hiccup in the second round when Swiatek had to battle off a Naomi Osaka match point, the World No.1 has had a dream run in the tournament.
