After 17 races in a total of 24, McLaren has managed a minor lead and gone past defending champions Red Bull Racing. But can they hold on to it?

The British motor racing team Mc-Laren is currently leading the Constructors’ Championship tally, after a first and fourth place finish for its two drivers – Oscar Piastri and Lando Noris – at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 15, 2024. McLaren (476) is currently 20 points ahead of defending champion Red Bull Racing (456), with third place holder Ferrari at 425 points. There are only 7 races left for the year, and Red Bull’s chances at winning the Constructors’ Championship a third consecutive time look slim.
Only a year ago, McLaren had finished the season in 4thplace, but this year, with both Piastri and Norris consistently making top 5 finishes, including 4 race wins between the two of them, the Constructor is, undoubtedly a strong contender for the Constructors’ Championship 2024. Red Bull, which had a blazing season in 2023, winning all but the Singaporean Grand Prix (which went to Carlos Sainz), has not had a win since the Spanish Grand Prix in June this year.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen is leading the Drivers’ Championship on account of having notched up 7 wins this season, but he’s been struggling for most part of the season. His teammate Sergio Perez has not had a podium finish since the China Grand Prix, with top 10 driver finishes in most of the races since then.
The fight for the Constructors’ Championship will be between McLaren and Ferrari more likely, given that the Italian race company is not far behind with consistently good performances from both its drivers – Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz.
Meanwhile, in the Drivers’ Championship. Verstappen (313) still has 59 point advantage over nearest rival Norris (254), with Leclerc a close third at 235 and Piastri at 222. The race in this contest is likely to be a hard fought one between these four men in the season ending races.
