The 2024 F1 racing calendar has a grueling 24 races, which began on February 29 in Bahrain and will go on till early December to conclude in Abu Dhabi. This season is already 13 races down, with some held in back-to-back weekends, or with a 2-week break, at the most. The teams, and, most importantly, the drivers, have not really had downtime and the summer break after the Belgian Grand Prix for just under a month, will give them just that. The teams will get another autumn break later in the year, considering that the second half of the racing calendar has a couple of triple headers.

Last weekend, all eyes were on the Hungarian Grand Prix and if Max Verstappen would make it three in a row at the circuit. However, a collision with Lewis Hamilton during lap 63 (of a total 70), while fighting for a podium finish at third position, literally gave Verstappen’s Red Bull wings, as the car was momentarily air borne but sustained no major damage, allowing him to finish 5th eventually. Race officials did not penalize either driver for the incident.

The race was eventually won by Oscar Piastri, who began at the front of the grid along with teammate Lando Norris, who’d secured pole position during qualifying. The 1-2 finish in Hungary placed McLaren at number 2 on the Constructors’ Championship table, ahead of Ferrari, and only 51 points shy of current leader Red Bull. Given the troubles Verstappen has had with his car and performances this racing season, and Sergio Perez’ contribution in single digits in most of his races, it is unlikely that Red Bull can put up a stiff fight in the Constructor’s Championship.

In the Drivers’ Championship, despite not having half as good a racing season as he did in 2023, Verstappen is still a solid 76 points ahead of nearest rival Lando Norris. With 11 races still left for the year, Norris and third place holder Charles Leclerc could still turn things around and give the defending champion a run for his money.
