The 2024 Formula 1 race calendar is on a month-long autumn break, which, unlike the summer break, does not include a complete shutdown. The 4-week gap was included after the Singapore Grand Prix, so that teams and drivers have some respite before the last quarter of races, which are almost on consecutive weekends. The drivers will be back on track on the weekend of October 18-20 for the Pirelli United States Grand Prix, followed by Gran Premio De La Ciudad De Mexico a week later and Lenovo Grande Premio De Sao Paulo in Brazil in the first week of November.

There are only 6 races remaining in the season, and the top 4 drivers are still in contention for the Drivers’ Championship. Besides points leader Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc and Oscar Piastri stand a chance of taking home the trophy. Norris has had 10 podium finishes, including 3 wins, Leclerc 9 podiums and 2 wins, while Piastri recorded 6 podiums and 2 wins. Verstappen also has 9 podium finishes, of which 7 were wins, but the Red Bull Racing driver has not taken the checkered flag first since the Spanish Grand Prix in June.

F1 Drivers and Constructors points after Race 18

Despite a less than stellar season, Max Verstappen has managed to hold on to his lead for 3/4th of the racing season. He is currently at the top of the table with 331 points, but is only 52 points ahead of Lando Norris. If Norris wins or has podium finishes in most of the next 6 races, and Verstappen doesn’t, the McLaren driver could just be the 2024 champ. Ferrari’s Leclerc is a further 34 points behind at 245 points., while Piastri has 237 points. Considering that Norris, Leclerc and Piastri have consistently had good performances, Verstappen’s reign may end.

Meanwhile, in the Constructors championship, McLaren is more likely to emerge victorious, what with both its drivers, Norris and Piastri, bringing in valuable points in almost all races so far. McLaren has a lead over Red Bull Racing, with 516 against 475 and chances are that it will extend it further over the next 6 races. Verstappen’s fellow Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez’ contribution to the team kitty has been mostly in single digits, so, it is unlikely that the team will manage a resurgence at the end of the year. Ferrari, with 441 points, also has a fighting chance for the championship.
