The Afghanistan bowlers managed to halt the Australian batting lineup, but they couldn't contain Glenn Maxwell's onslaught in Mumbai. Maxwell and his captain, Pat Cummins, orchestrated a remarkable chase of 292 runs, resurrecting Australia from a precarious position of 91/7.
Living up to his "Bigshow" moniker, Maxwell guided Australia to a thrilling 3-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023, securing their place in the semi-finals where they will face South Africa.
The crowd in the stadium eagerly anticipated the winning moment, capturing it on their phones. Maxwell didn't disappoint as he hammered a SIX, sending the spectators into a frenzy.
A video of the match-winning SIX, which also marked Maxwell's achievement of scoring 201 runs, quickly went viral. Maxwell's magnificent innings made him the first Australian player to record a double century in ODI history.
In the second innings, Afghanistan's defense got off to a remarkable start with Naveen-ul-Haq and Azmatullah Omarzai orchestrating a stunning collapse in the Australian batting lineup. Pacer Naveen struck first, dismissing the explosive Travis Head for a duck, and then followed it up by trapping Mitchell Marsh LBW after he had scored a brisk 24 runs. Joining the effort, Omarzai swiftly removed David Warner and Josh Inglis in consecutive deliveries.
Nonetheless, Maxwell maintained his dominance even in the face of losing his partners, including Labuschagne (14), Marcus Stoinis (6), and Mitchell Starc (3). Skipper Pat Cummins stood firm, but it was Maxwell who spearheaded Australia's incredible resurgence. He also had a stroke of luck on a few occasions, benefitting from lapses in fielding and a favorable review decision.
Before the semi-final showdown, Australia will take on Bangladesh on November 11, while Afghanistan will face South Africa. India, having already secured a semi-final berth, awaits their opponent, which will be either New Zealand or Pakistan.
