Chasing the formidable target of 208 runs set by Australia, India had a promising start, with Yashasvi Jaiswal launching a boundary off the very first ball and following it up with a six in the opening over. However, this over also witnessed a terrible mix-up that led to the dismissal of the other opening batsman, Ruturaj Gaikwad, who did not even face a delivery at the Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam.

Following Jaiswal's delivery from Marcus Stoinis, he claimed a single run but attempted a risky second. However, the second run was never feasible. Jaiswal initially called for the second run but changed his mind halfway down the pitch, leaving Gaikwad stranded. Unfortunately, the damage was already done, as Gaikwad found himself caught midway with no chance of making it back, even with a slight fumble from the Australian wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

The unexpected fumble in the opening over left fans in disbelief, and many placed blame on Jaiswal for the mix-up, deeming it unnecessary.

As of the time of this article, five overs of the second innings were completed, and India scored 54 runs and lost both openers in the process. Jaiswal departed after scoring 21 runs off 8 balls.

The onus now falls on Ishan Kishan and captain Suryakumar Yadav to pursue the remaining runs required for victory in the first T20I of the five-match series.
