Vikram and Betal stories are adapted from Indian mythology. At the behest of a godman, King Vikramaditya goes on a quest to catch a cunning corpse named Betal, who hangs suspended from a banyan tree in the forest. Notorious Betal mounts the King’s back, narrates a story to him in each chapter and poses a question at the end. The purpose of these stories is to entertain and teach us simple life-lessons.
