J. T. Rogers is the creator of the American criminal drama television series Tokyo Vice, which is based on Jake Adelstein's 2009 book of the same name. It made its HBO Max debut. Ansel Elgort and Ken Watanabe play the key parts. The story takes place in 1999. American writer Jake Adelstein moved to Tokyo and needs to pass a written Japanese exam in order to be hired by a big Japanese newspaper. He starts at the bottom and manages to become their first foreign-born journalist. Living under the city's official line that "murder" is not acceptable, he is taken under the wing of a seasoned vice squad detective and begins to investigate the shadowy and hazardous world of the Japanese yakuza.
