Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2 plot:

Majorly taking place over a night, Kaali (Vikram), a grocery shop owner is contacted by powerful man Ravi (Prudhvi Raj), under whom Kaali had once worked as a henchman. Ravi seeks Kaali’s help to finish off the local SP Arunagiri (SJ Suryah) who is out there to encounter Ravi and his son Kannan (Suraj Venjaramoodu). But how are these people connected, and why do they seem to know a little more about each other?

The world of Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 hits differently. The world-building directors usually undertake is not what director SU Arun Kumar makes do with. Like the title suggests, it is the sequel, a world where the characters have already gotten to know each other and their relationships are established, or in this case, strained. There are no call-backs, except for an elaborate flashback. It is a world already spinning, and you just get into it for a ride. When names are uttered and narratives are recalled, the characters just react, and it takes a while to connect the dots. This is what, essentially, Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 is: a deeply detailed narrative effectively shouldered by Vikram and Co.

By deeply detailed, I mean Arun Kumar does not create establishing shots or simple call backs to connect the dots. Of course, there is one flashback, but the director really builds enough meat to chew on. The narrative gets thicker and broader, which at times becomes both a boon and a bane. Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 begins with a woman coming to Ravi’s house, accusing him of causing harm to her husband. The latter denies, but for all you know, Ravi and Kannan aren’t good souls either. Arunagiri, who comes from a past bitterness, is quick to initiate an encounter after the woman’s husband comes to the police station to file a missing wife complaint. From here on, the narrative isn’t about the couple, but the ferocious and personal vengeance that Kaali, Arunagiri, Kannan and Ravi share, until… until the last shot where Arun Kumar finishes the circle, he began the film with. As small as it may be, the detailing is worth it.

In one of the interviews of the film, Arun Kumar recalls waiting in queue for one of the classic action entertainers of Vikram. If you recall or notice it, then what this film has to offer to you is clear on the table. There is a bit of that, and more of modern storytelling where films go beyond the stereotypical buildups and dialogue diarrhoea. Even as Veera Dheera Sooran might not come under the typecast commercial flick, a particular moment is worth the wait, especially when the narrative finds the right time to hype Vikram with a tinge of nostalgic value. Now connect the dots, when I say the film is an action thriller that relies on stunts. Do the guessing yourself. And just as you think the film cannot get more commercial, recall the unusual interval block gives heavy competition to steal the thunder.

In Veera Dheera Sooran, the camera work comes as close as performative art. Cinematographer Theni Eswar adopts handheld shots and single shots to keep the grippingness in the story alive. For a film that goes back and forth, and intercuts adorn the screenplay, the shots with their hand-held shakiness keep the tension alive. The music, especially the background score, aids the film.

The film brings a strong cast game to the fore, for Vikram as Kaali rules as the backbone in Veera Dheera Sooran. As a caring family man, a talented henchman, and a guy with quick wit to escapism, it is Vikram who defines what Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 essentially is; rustic and edgy.

Veera Dheera Sooran Part 2 movie verdict:

Arun Kumar has really spent enough and more time developing the world of the film, which relies more on detailing. While one has to wait and watch if the first part will complete the circle, the second part does a pretty good job of densifying it. It is a film that would make you go amiss if you blink, for it is loaded with tiny references and expressions that you need to catch hold of. Albeit lags, Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2 is a film that is both rustic and a new form of storytelling.
