Tamilarasan review: Vijay Antony's action drama is an exhausting watch, thanks to lousy screenplay and making

Story: The life of a sincere cop changes after his son is diagnosed with a rare heart issue. He tries to arrange the huge sum required for the boy's surgery, but in vain. Quite dejected with the merciless attitude from a few doctors and his ill-fate, he abducts one of the heart surgeons, which leads to a big commotion in the city. A superior police officer who has been waiting to take revenge on the former utilizes this situation and decides to finish him off. What will happen to the frustrated father and his unwell son?

Review: Babu Yogeswaran's Tamilarasan, which has Vijay Antony headlining the film in a titular role, is a tiresome outing from the word go. It begins with a cricket match between police officers in Tamil Nadu and Delhi. The conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist is established right there with an inorganic sequence.

Tamilarasan (Vijay) is a sincere cop whose life revolves around his family that involves wife and a son. He encourages his little son to be a sportsperson, but the boy suffers from an unusual heart disease. An immediate surgery costs a huge amount, making things worse for him.

Despite putting his best foot forward, Tamilarasan realizes that it is almost impossible to pay the required amount. The inhumane treatment from hospital management puts him in distress. With no options left, he abducts a doctor, which leads to a panic among patients and the police department.

Enter Rana (Sonu Sood), a notorious cop, who is known for his atrocious behaviour and cold-blooded nature. As someone who has been waiting for an opportunity to unleash revenge against Tamil for personal reasons, he attempts to cash in on the situation.  

The plot looks slightly silly on paper itself, but a neat execution coupled with an engaging screenplay could have saved the film. However, lack of convincing conflicts, fragile characters and logical loopholes make the movie an exhausting watch. The screenplay touches upon too many things, but ends up justifying none.

Watching some of its portions gives us the feel that it is a family drama, certain situations remind us that it is an action flick. There are circumstances which make us believe that this is a medical thriller. There is a father-son angle, mother-son angle, conflict between a junior and a senior cop, friendship between two cops, superficially written political interferences, people's agitation for a social cause, and so on.

Sadly, none of these facets are explored and the underlying emotion, too, fails to connect with viewers because of too many aspects stuffed into the film which has a run time of just 120 minutes.  

Verdict: Despite a shorter run time, the movie fails to engage the audience despite having experienced actors like Radha Ravi, Suresh Gopi, Kasthuri, YG Mahendra, Ramya Nambeesan and Sangeetha among others.
