Special Day review: A unique look at the concept of birthdays

What’s it about:

Special Day is about Ved (Shantanu Maheshwari) and his relationship with his mother, Malti (Sheeba Chaddha). Ved is excited to spend his birthday with his friends and does not have the time to open the gift his mother has given him. However, when he does, the film takes an interesting turn. He realizes that his birthday is a special day for his mother too and heads back home to spend it with her.

What’s hot:

The portrayal of the simplicity of the love between a mother and son makes this film a must-watch. Emotions flow through the film effortlessly. Several films overdo the concept of the sacrifices a mother often has to make, but this film seems to strike just the right balance.

Special Day reminds us of the beauty of the relationship a child shares with their mother. Malti’s meaningful birthday gift to Ved shows us how attentive our parents are to our needs and it makes Ved realize who he wishes to spend his birthday with.

The music, dialogues and cinematography are the cherries on top of the emotional and raw performances by the actors.

What’s not:

The only scene in the film that came across as being over the top was where Ved and his friends are in the car. The scene does not seem realistic and hence, doesn’t fall in line with the rest of the film, which is rooted in reality.

Verdict:

Special Day is a short film that will be sure to make viewers question their relationship with their parents. The film takes a unique look at the concept of birthdays and is a must-watch. Although not too emotional, the end will be sure to bring tears to your eyes and a smile to your face.
