Review:
Tyler Perry is most known for his role as Madea, a character etched in cinema history. With Madea returning in A Madea Homecoming, nothing less than comedy gold is expected from the film, and it delivers big time. The movie is set around Madea’s grandson’s homecoming and the family coming together. Tamela Mann as Cora, David Mann as Mr. Brown and Cassi Davis Patton as Aunt Bam are all faces that return in the movie. Gabrielle Dennis, Brandon Black, Isha Blaaker, plus a guest appearance from iconic Irish actor Brendan O’Carroll as Agnes Brown also light up A Madea Homecoming.
Madea’s grandson is with his family ahead of his homecoming, where he has become a valedictorian. He intends to introduce his boyfriend to the family and comes out to them as gay. Though he is not sure how his family will react, they seem to take it well. Set around a lawn full of family, this scene is one of the many scenes that is packed with jokes, ranging from Agnes Brown being accidentally high to Mr. Brown acting out of control.
There are also elements of drama in the movie, with Cora learning news that is anything but fun. But Perry’s writing comes to the rescue of the viewers, dousing the drama with more comedy, which goes as far as to give a look into Rosa Parks in a bus. While it might seem over the top, you simply cannot hold yourself from laughing out loud,
The movie in itself is a fun watch, skimming through relationships, drama, and comedy that has made Tyler Perry a legend in the industry. Madea is back in all her glory and is straightforward, guns packing and full of sass, while always keeping the best interests of her family in mind. The introduction of Agnes Brown, who is from Ireland, lays the perfect ground for comedy that relies on racism. While this could be questioned in any other case, considering how Perry has used Madea for empowering the black American community over the years, it gets an easy pass.
With a long list of movies, shows and plays featuring the character already under the belt for Perry, A Madea Homecoming is a movie the fans have been looking forward to eagerly, and it delivers. While this is the case, this would be a perfect place for any first-time viewer to be introduced to the character and the people around her.
While it would be wrong to say she carries the whole movie, she is one of the biggest shining lights of the movie. Perry has once again gotten the character absolutely right and it would be a shame for anyone to miss out on this comedy, especially if you are a fan of Perry’s iconic character.
Verdict:
A Madea Homecoming is hilarious from start to finish and has Perry’s Madea back to her best. The movie is a must-watch for people who are familiar with Perry’s previous outings as Madea. It also would be a fun movie for first-time viewers to watch.
