The 1978 film, Superman, based on the Superman comics by DC, was groundbreaking in its use of computer generated images and paved the way for other superhero movies. The 1989 movie, Batman, was director Tim Burton's rendition of the Batman comics, and it featured Michael Keaton in the titular role and Jack Nicholson as Joker, the antagonist.
There have been few underwhelming DC films since, until Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy was released to unprecedented acclaim. The trilogy also features some of the most iconic Batman characters such as the Joker, Scarecrow and Bane.
Henry Cavill was cast as Superman in the 2013 Superman reboot, Man of Steel. And despite criticism at the time, the film remains one of the best superhero origin stories. The Snyder directorial was followed up with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
DC also released the first successful female-led superhero film, Wonder Woman, in 2017.
The role of Batman was played by Robert Pattinson in the 2022 Matt Reeves film, The Batman.
The character of Joker also got a standalone movie in 2019, when Joaquin Phoenix played the titular role in Todd Phillips' directorial, Joker.
