The actress and filmmaker Greta Gerwig, who was once regarded as an indie film icon has propelled herself to superstardom after helming the blockbuster hit Barbie. Joe Swanberg, a prominent figure from the mumblecore movement is responsible for launching the career of Gerwig with Gerwig co-writing and co-directing his movies such as Hannah Takes The Stairs and Nights and Weekends.

In 2010, Gerwig appeared in the comedy-drama Greenberg directed by her partner Noah Baumbach. She appeared in three more Baumbach movies, with her performance in Frances Ha receiving critical acclaim.

She wrote and directed the coming-of-age film Ladybird in 2017 which received three Academy Award nominations including one for Best director. She adapted Louisa May Alcott's coming-of-age novel Little Women to the big screen in 2019 which was also critically acclaimed.

Her third directorial venture, Barbie, came out in 2023 and stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in the lead roles.
