After starting out as a professional dancer, Jennifer Lopez became a Fly Girl dancer in the American sketch comedy series In Living Color. She later appeared as a recurring character in the television show South Central in 1994. She moved on to feature films and debuted in the drama movie My Family in 1995 which won her a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress. She also appeared in the films Jack and Blood and Wine.

In 1997, she portrayed the singer Selena in the eponymous biopic Selena. Her performance, which received a Golden Globe nomination, was widely appreciated with the critics noting her screen presence. The 1998 crime comedy movie, Out of Sight and the romantic comedy movie Maid in Manhattan, released in 2002, established Lopez as a prominent actress in Hollywood.

She ventured into the music industry and brought out her first album, On the 6, in 1999. She became the first woman to have a number-one musical album and film in the same week when her second studio album J.Lo and the romantic comedy The Wedding Planner, which starred Lopez and Matthew McConaughey was released simultaneously.

Her performance in the crime drama Hustlers garnered critical acclaim.
