YRF and Netflix move Gujarat HC over stay order on Junaid Khan’s debut film, Maharaj

Yash Raj Films (YRF) and Netflix, who had collaborated to bankroll Junaid Khan’s debut film Maharaj, have now moved Gujarat High court over stay order on the film. Maharaj was to be released on the OTT platform today, on June 14. However, a case in the high court caused the film’s release to be stalled.

Multiple industry sources have confirmed that YRF and Netflix are challenging the stay order on Maharaj. A reputed, veteran trade source says, “YRF and Netflix are challenging the Stay order. The matter is in court. Maharaj is based on a real-life case. It is adapted from Saurabh Shah's book titled Maharaj. The author has also come out to say that the film does not vilify the Vaishnav community or the religion. It is about a social reformer, who brought about a positive change in society. The makers are hopeful for a positive outcome on this.”

Maharaj, scheduled to release on Netflix today, stalled

This is in response to the stay issued after few devotees and follower of Pushtimargi Vaishav Panth approached the high court. A notice was issued not only to YRF and Netflix but also the broadcasting authority, Central board of Film Certificate (which we know better as CBFC).

VHP asks for preview of the film

After the complaint, the youth wing of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (Bajrang Dal) was also concerned that the movie might present a religious leader in an unruly manner and hurt religious sentiments. ETimes reports that they have requested the makers for a preview to ensure that there’s nothing in the film that could hurt the people. However, they are yet to receive a response on the same.

Maharaj has been directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra. It marks the debut of Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan. The movie also stars Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey in lead roles.
