Beau DeMayo Reveals Alleged Reason Behind His Termination
Beau DeMayo was the man in charge of X-Men ’97 and had already worked on Seasons 1 and 2 before he was suddenly fired from his position as the creator. The filmmaker was also involved with Blade, from which he was also removed. No official reason was given for his firing, though rumors persisted. The X-Men ’97 creator, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram, revealed that he was abruptly fired by Marvel Studios because he shared fan art of himself that was gay pride-themed, envisioning him as a Cyclops version, though not the authentic one. He wrote, “Firstly, I'm so grateful to have worked on #XMen97, collaborating with some amazingly talented folks. Creating the revival was a dream come true, and the support fans have shown is so touching. However, I felt it pressing for me to speak up in the wake of leaving the show.”
Beau DeMayo added, “On the next slide is #XMen fan art I posted on Instagram for Gay Pride in June. On June 13, #Marvel sent a letter notifying me that they’d stripped my Season 2 credits due to the post. Sadly, this is the latest in a troubling pattern I suffered through while working on #XMen97 and #Blade. I have more to say soon but must take a step back from social media to find a safer space for me to be out, proud, and nerdy.”
Marvel Reacts To Beau DeMayo’s Comments
According to Deadline, Marvel Studios issued a statement following X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo’s social media post and denied his claims, stating that he was terminated due to the egregious nature of some findings. “Mr. DeMayo was terminated in March 2024 following an internal investigation. Given the egregious nature of the findings, we severed ties with him immediately, and he has no further affiliation with Marvel,” the statement read.
The company, however, has not commented on what the investigation was exactly about. Meanwhile, reports back in the day suggested that Beau DeMayo was investigated for alleged sexual misconduct and that the credit removal was due to him breaching the two sides’ separation agreement.
