Worst of 2022: Vikram's Cobra to Dhanush's Maaran, Tamil films that tested the patience of moviegoers

Tamil cinema has had some memorable releases this year. 2022 was the year in which Kollywood witnessed two record breaking movies which kept the cash registers ringing, inspiring several filmmakers and exhibitors. This was also the year which brought back several hopes to the entire industry as audiences flocked back to movie halls after being skeptical for a couple of years owing to the pandemic.

However, this year also witnessed a string of disheartening outings as well. Some of them had leading heroes playing the lead, leaving movie buffs dejected. We bring you a list of 10 Tamil projects that left the audience furious.

Cobra

The action drama helmed by Ajay Gnanamuthu was a colossal disappointment, thanks to its overlong and confusing screenplay. Even Vikram's earnest performances in dual roles couldn't save the movie from becoming one of the forgettable fare this year. Despite AR Rahman's music and a few talented actors on board, the big budget flick was a nightmare for audiences.  

DSP

The Ponram directorial received flak for coming up with a run-of-the-mill story which was presented in an uninspiring manner. Vijay Sethupathi, who essayed the lead role in it, was criticized for his poor choice of script. His portrayal of a cop wasn't convincing which was a huge shock to moviegoers. The way in which other characters were underwritten made things worse.

Captain

The trailer of the Shakti Soundar Rajan directorial had adequate elements to make cinephiles wait for the film, though they couldn't brush off the striking similarities with Predator. But the Arya-starrer ended up as a huge failure because of inorganic construction of scenes and lackadaisical approach towards the plot.  

Prince

Billed as a comic caper, many expected the movie to do wonders at the box office. The Anudeep directorial failed in terms of having an engaging screenplay. Sivakarthikeyan and Sathyaraj put their best foot forward, but the lack of intriguing emotions and lukewarm comedy sequences made it a half-hearted fare.

Maaran

The Dhanush-starrer directed by Karthick Naren made movie lovers elated when the project was announced. Later, the makers' decision to opt for a direct-OTT-release raised doubt over its content. The film was the most incoherent big ticket flick made in recent times, offering zero takeaway.

Coffee With Kadhal

The multi-starrer rom-com, helmed by Sundar C, was another forgettable fare among the notable releases this year. The presence of Jiiva, Jai and Srikanth apart from Yogi Babu and Redin Kingsley's comic acts couldn't save this convoluted mess. The film featured a bevy of talented artists, but the lack of relatable emotions made it a bomb at the box office.

Agent Kannayiram

The official remake of Telugu film Agent Sai Srinivasa Atreya was unbelievably butchered by makers by making several unwanted changes. Santhanam's experience in handling comedy couldn't save the dark comedy from becoming a damp squib. The film directed by Manoj Beedha turned out to be another disappointment for the actor this year.

The Legend

The acting debut of highly successful entrepreneur Saravanan Arul unsurprisingly turned out to be a celebration for meme creators. The hard work of amazingly talented technicians who worked in it turned futile with spoof-worthy performance from Saravanan. The ambitious, yet done-to-death story chosen by director duo JD-Jerry ended up testing the patience of viewers.

Naai Sekar Returns

The film, which was tipped as the much-awaited comeback of Vadivelu, turned out to be a disaster because of an uninteresting screenplay that offered no laughs. What was meant to be a comic caper ended up as a yawn-fest, thanks to outdated writing and soulless characters created by director Suraj.

Varalaru Mukkiyam

The Jiiva-starrer, which tried to emulate some of the actor's yesteryear comedy films, turned out to be a crashing bore. The plethora of double entendres and lack of novelty made the movie an epic disappointment. The Santhosh Rajan directorial had weak characterizations, another reason for its failure.
